Company story

KATARZIS was founded in April 2023 to accomodate fun and experimental design ventures focused on interiors. The furniture produced on demand and hand-crafted in Stockholm by a local smith shop.

"The design will be built on classical foundations but will be sprayed with a futuristic perfume. AI and sci-fi are as much of an inspiration as a Victorian villa by the Como lake or a Japanese shrine." says founder and designer Katarina who has a background in experimental physics and AI.

"I lived a short while in Tokyo and I was heavily impressed by the aesthetics of the Japanese architecture, both ancient and contemporary, and how they were so seemlessly intermixed. Other sources of inspiration are bridges, tools, damms and construction material in general. As a child I accompanied my dad to hardware stores and I found myself dreamingly browsing all the beautiful drills and chains and imagining what I could make out of them."

The name KATARZIS comes from the Ancient Greek word katharsis and means "purification" and "cleaning". In dramaturgy the term refers to the act of going through the purifying process of feeling the same strong emotions that the characters are experiencing on stage or on the page, often followed by a final release of tension or emotional stress.

founder and designer

Katarina is a physicist and machine learning scientist who has been designing furniture for fun since 2016. In the fall of 2020 she did an apprenticeship for Julia Eriksson at ARRGH Landscaping and Architecture inspiring her to start her own design endeavor.
